Stream for free

Your Amazon subscription includes many movies and TV shows you can watch at no charge, including The Boys, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, The Wilds, The Tender Bar and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Enable the Free to Me switch (at the top of the app’s window) to keep your streaming budget-friendly.

Set age limits

Amazon Prime Video offers hundreds of kid-friendly choices, including the award-winning series Tumble Leaf, Creative Galaxy and Pete the Cat. Use the app’s parental controls to ensure your child is watching only kid-appropriate fare.

Make sure your 7-year-old is sticking to content rated for 7-year-olds.

In the My Stuff view, click the Settings button (the gear icon), then click Parental Controls. Under Viewing Restrictions you can choose the maximum age rating family members are allowed to watch without entering a PIN, along with which of your devices this restriction should apply to. For example, you might set the Apple TV in the family room to 7, while allowing all age levels on your Mac (so you can catch an episode of Bosch before bed).

Under Purchase Restrictions, you can also choose to require a PIN for media purchases.

Watch your data

Want to conserve data while tethered to your iPhone or avoid hogging Wi-Fi bandwidth? Head to the same Settings screen and click Streaming & Downloading > Streaming Quality. You’ll use the least data by choosing Good (which the app says uses about 0.6 GB per hour of video); if data isn’t a concern, choose Better (about 1.8 GB per hour) or Best (about 5.8 GB per hour).

Choose how much storage space downloaded video will require.

Or avoid streaming altogether by downloading videos before you go – you’re limited only by your Mac’s storage. Under Download Quality, you can choose Good (about 0.5 GB of data per hour of downloaded video), Better (about 0.8 GB per hour), or Best (about 1.4 GB per hour).
