Royal Kingdom

We take a closer look at the App Store’s must-play games.

Find a match fit for royalty in Royal Kingdom, a gloriously fun puzzle game from Dream Games. Slide tiles to match like-for-like shapes and get them to disappear, and once you’ve cleared enough from your board you’ll earn potions to spend building a lavish kingdom for King Richard.

Why it’s popular

No two levels are alike in Royal Kingdom. Sometimes you’ll be matching tiles to smash boxes or clear dense green overgrowth, other times you’ll be collapsing columns or collecting owls from birdhouses. Eventually you’ll even find yourself locked into battle with the Dark King and his minions from the Dark Kingdom, where your matches don’t just disappear, but also send a stream of projectiles in your enemy’s direction.

Pretty soon, Royal Kingdom gets devilishly tricky. You’re not just working to clear tiles, you’re working to clear tiles within a specific number of moves. That means getting creative with where and how you make your matches, as well as exploring the potent power-ups available in the game.

Levels in Royal Kingdom are filled with a range of different items for you to clear in interesting ways.

Getting started

At its most basic, Royal Kingdom is a game about matching three like-for-like tiles in a row, which is why this genre of game is often referred to as a match-3 puzzle. As you get more comfortable, however, you’ll find there are potentially bigger rewards waiting for you if you start matching more tiles in more creative orientations.

Match four tiles in a row, for example, and you’ll net yourself a powerful Rocket power-up. Match five, and you’ll earn an Electro Ball that can clear every tile of the same colour across your board. Even better, if you match tiles into an L or T shape you can earn yourself an explosive Dynamite power-up to really shake up your game. Items like these are crucial to clearing your board quickly, and deploying them at the start of a level is a great way to get your game off to a strong start.

Did you know?

Although Royal Kingdom is primarily a single-player experience, you can still benefit from working with others. Once you pass level 20, it becomes possible to join a team, where you can not only chat with other players, but also offer and request help when you need it most. So the next time you find yourself running low on lives, why not turn to your team for some assistance?
