Far away from the hustle and bustle of the city is your very own fixer-upper, waiting for your magic touch. As you settle into the Apple Arcade game Japanese Rural Life Adventure, you'll find that even the quiet life has a few surprises in store.

Since you’ve decided to relocate to the countryside with one bag and nothing else (bold move!), there’s plenty of work to be done. You’ll need to DIY your home renovations, clean up your new digs and convince the scary-looking landowner to let you stay!

And once you manage those feats, it’s time to settle into your new life – without some of the modern conveniences you’re used to. If you want to take a bath, for example, you’ll need to draw the water yourself and light a fire to warm it. To create a pond, collect a stack of stones and fill it with water using a spout.

Each time you take on a task, your energy (in the form of Hearts) decreases. At the beginning of the game, sleeping is the only way to recover your strength. So nap often, and refer to the Guide if you need help along the way.

The items in the shed will clue you in to what projects to start next.

In the countryside, collecting lumber, stone and firewood and working in the garden will quickly become part of your daily routine. And as you get used to the work, you’ll find yourself growing stronger and learning to do things more efficiently.

Every morning, a woman comes to your door with a few small items and daily necessities for sale. There’s also a man from the town hall who visits you in the afternoon, and he’ll buy flowers you’ve picked, lumber and stones you’ve collected and crops you’ve grown – anything that the village needs.

Is there room in your house for a four-legged room-mate?

Country life isn’t all work and no play either. When it’s time for a break, take a trek up the mountain behind your house or visit the shrine next door. Or try your hand at catching insects and fishing!

As the four seasons transform the landscape you now call home, you’ll find that even life in the slow lane is filled with learning and discovery.
