5 tips on studying with ELSA Speak

You’ve memorised the vocabulary, mastered the grammar, now it’s time to put your knowledge to use. ELSA Speak uses AI to generate speaking practices in lifelike scenarios, analyse your pronunciation and offer detailed feedback. Here are five tips from the App Store Editors to help you learn more from every virtual encounter.

Listen for details

One major focus of ELSA Speak is pronunciation and enunciation. When you’re working on speech-related exercises, pay special attention to stressed and joined syllables to improve your score.

Translate the question

English is the app’s primary language of instruction, whether you’re reading a grammar tip or conversing with an AI character. If you’re not fully confident in your English comprehension yet, tap the dialogue box to find an icon that lets you translate English into other languages. Remember, each role-playing exercise has a series of tasks that must be completed before the conversation can end.

Take the hint

Not very familiar with the topic of your current conversation? If you draw a blank, tap the light bulb on the bottom right and the system will suggest appropriate responses. Of course, you could always change the subject – see how the AI responds to you veering into small talk during a work meeting.

Get prepped for conversations you’ll likely encounter.

Choose your topic

If none of the app’s prewritten dialogues is to your liking, try creating new scenarios with ELSA AI using the Explore function. Choose ”Surprise me“ to have the system randomly generate a scene, or go to “My own scenario” to set up an all-new interaction. For instance, ask the AI to simulate a difficult customer to see if you can successfully make your sales pitch in English.

Record your exercises

When you complete a session, the app will evaluate your pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar, then make suggestions. The app can translate this valuable feedback into your primary language – and it might be a good idea to save it for further review. Given time, your English will surely improve by leaps and bounds!
