moving from wordpress.com to wordpress.org problems
-
Hi. I set up a WP.org account last night with the help of AI. I was IN, I exported my files from WP.com but ran into so much trouble uploading them to WP.org. Only part of my blog came across.
And worst of all, I can’t log into WP.org!!! I use the ‘admin’ and password generated when I was doing it and it says I don’t have an account. Not under my usual email address either.
HELP.

I have two domains and hosting elsewhere so I don’t need that.

You cannot upload files for your website at wp.org. Here, you can only download the free WordPress software to upload and install it with a host of your choice. Have you done that? If so, you will have entered login details during the installation process that you will need to use. Your login details here at wp.org have nothing to do with this installation.
I recommend following this guide to get started with WordPress: https://wordpress.org/documentation/article/get-started-with-wordpress/
Thanks. I am still trying. I have exported my posts, pages and media and not all of it has come across… I am reading the articles you sent.

Hi @zefifamelis . This is just a follow-up to check whether you moved to wordpress.org successfully. From your last response, you seemed lost.

Hi @zefifamelis , glad you responded. We can sort it out together. I want you to know that this confusion is super common. The whole WordPress.com vs WordPress.org thing trips up almost everyone at first, so you’re not alone here.
Let me help you figure it out.
First, let’s clarify things:
When you say you “set up a WP.org account”, what actually happened? Did you have a hosting setup first? Or just created a WP.org account (WordPress.org does not host websites like WordPress.com does)? Feel free to share screenshots.
Please also feel free to share your website link, I’ll take a look.
This happens to everyone moving from wp.com to wp.org and its absolutely fixable.
I look forward to getting your response soon, so I can guide you effectively.
Thanks,
Jim
Hi Jim. Firstly, I have a website that I’ve had for years – already have domain name and hosting through Crazy Domains, an Australian outfit since I was living there at the time.
And then i linked up my wordpress.com with junk4joy.com.au – somehow. Anyway, thats my wordpress blog.
So when looking for alternatives to building a website that would work way easier than creating it myself given that I know very little about website creation (the basic basics of Dreamweaver), I looked around for how best to create a website that would work easier for me… which brought me to WordPress.org as an option as it would offer more for less than upgrading my WordPress.com account to a business account.
I am happy to take this off the forum if its allowed. You can find me on Facebook or Instragram under Zefi Famelis – there are 2 of us. I’m not the blonde one.

Hi @zefifamelis . Thank you for getting back. Your preference is ok with me. I will be glad to help out 🙂.
Thanks,
Jim
Looking into the link you posted. I look at the site code and it seems to be running in wordpress.org.
Did you already migrate all your data to that site successfully? I asking because the site seems normal for me right now.
Hi Jorge, thanks for doing that. Its not all there. I keep getting emails to moderate comments on posts but I dont see any comments to moderate when I click the link. Plus when I exported files from .com they didn’t all come over. There are more than half the posts missing, plus the pages.

Do you have any backups from the wordpress.org site?
What did you use to migrate the wordpress.com site’s content to wordpress.org site? What’s tool?
My WP.com site is still up. I used the built-in export files function but then WP.org said the files were too large so I did it in groups… after a few tries, in the end I got less than half the posts across. I think the export function didnt work properly. We’re talking years of posts and images here…
